Helical Piers
Foundation Services helical piers are constructed with a product line manufactured by Earth Contact Products called "Helical Torque Anchors".
These ECP Torque Anchors are made up of either tubular or solid square leads with helical flights that are drilled into the ground. The helical shaped flights come in 3/8" or 1/2" thickness and range in diameter from 6" to 16". The shaft diameters for the leads and extensions range from 1-1/2" to 4-1/2", and lengths range from 18" to 10'. We typically use 2-7/8" tubular anchors for load bearing structures and 1-1/2" tubular anchors for non-load (or light-load) bearing structures such as porches.
These anchors are driven into the ground with hydraulic torque motors. We have two different size motors that we use depending on the size anchors that we are installing and the amount of access we have on the job.
Some of the benefits associated with helical piers are that they provide both load bearing (compression) and uplift (tension) resistance, they can be quickly installed with little or no vibration, there is little or no disturbance to the site, they can be loaded immediately after installation, and they can also be installed in inclement weather. There are many uses for these piers including new construction foundations, failed foundation stabilization, retaining walls, and utility poles.
